AI In Policing: Agent Augmented Practice

Agent Augmented Practice

TL;DR - AI will work with public safety professionals as a team to improve outcomes.

One AI vs Many AI

A lot of people seem to interact with AI in a very search-oriented mindset. We have used search engines and early iterations for large language models like ChatGPT as helpful chatbots. This seems to taint our view of AI as a single entity.

There are certainly applications where the advancements in search and chatbots make AI useful for public safety. However, the real power of AI is in the ability to augment the work of public safety professionals by functioning as team members.

Imagine one AI is designated as the report writer. It is trained on the department's policies and procedures and is general enough to take in a variety of input from the original call for service, the BWC feed, and other sources to construct a report that represents what the human officer would have written.

This would be helpful for the officer, but it suffers from the same problem as the rookie officer. It has a lot of knowledge, but it lacks experience.

Many AI

Now imagine that the report writer AI is joined by a Sgt. AI. The Sgt. AI is trained on the various reports written in from the department and is able to provide feedback to the report writer AI to help improve its performance.

What if the Sgt. AI and the report writer AI are working on a call about a burglary? Why not have an expert burglary investigator AI join the case?

I think you can see where I am going. Many AI agents working together can augment the work of public safety professionals in ways that have not been possible before.

Information Flow in Traditional Practice

The Future

I believe that every officer needs to have the most accurate information, up-to-date policy, access to the most cutting-edge research, and an understanding of the law at a level on par with a constitutional law professor.

This is a pipe dream if we expect officers to do this on their own. However, if we can build AI agents that can do this and work with officers as a team, we can make this dream a reality.
