AI Use Statement

This document outlines the acceptable use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in my courses. Any use of AI not explicitly addressed here will be considered academic misconduct.

Plagiarism

You must not use others’ words or ideas without proper attribution. Failure to do so will result in severe penalties, including possible expulsion from the university. Always cite any sources you use when creating assignments, papers, discussion questions, or any other course materials.

Disclosure

You are required to disclose any use of generative AI in your work. Failure to disclose AI use will be treated as academic misconduct and will carry the associated penalties.

Expectation

All students are REQUIRED to use AI tools before submitting assignments. Generative AI is a powerful resource that can help you refine and communicate your ideas more effectively. It is expected that you embrace these tools to enhance clarity, conciseness, and overall quality in your writing.

Failure to use AI to proofread emails, assignments, discussion questions, etc., will result in a lower score. There is NO EXCUSE for unclear, wordy, or poorly structured writing. AI tools are available to help you ensure your ideas are communicated clearly and effectively.

You must also disclose your use of AI tools, specifying which tools you used and how you used them. For example:

  • “This email was crafted by me with the assistance of GPT-4.”
  • “Claude 3.5 was used as an editor and writing partner for this work; the ideas and concepts are my own.”
  • “This research was aided by Perplexity AI, Scite, and Google Gemini for source curation and development.”

Expect that if you turn in work, you could be given a quiz on that work at any time during the semester. AI tools can also be used to generate accurate custom quizzes tailored to your submissions. This technique may be used to ensure understanding of the work you submit.

Lastly, I encourage you to share any innovative and clever uses of AI with the class. I hope you use AI responsibly and leverage it to become better learners and writers.

If you have questions or concerns, please let me know.
